Training

Most people enter the club as beginners with no technical experience in mountaineering activities. Because of this, a large part of the club's activities are training based. The club provides informal training via more experienced members and susidised professional training via qualified instructors to all active members.

Subsidised professional training is achieved in part through The Conor O'Keeffe Fund. The Conor O'Keeffe Fund was set up by his family in 2000 after Conor's death in a mountaineering accident. Conor was captain of the club at the time and his obituary can be read by following this link. The club would like to thank the O'Keeffe family for their continued support and involvement. Formal statements of the funds use for the periods 2001-2008 can be downloaded here.

Several professional training courses are available through Bord Oiliúnt Sléibhe, (BOS) the Irish Mountain Training Board. The club offers a number of courses; "Mountain Skills 1&2", "Mountain Leader Award", "Single Pitch Award", "Remote Emergency Care" and "Introduction to Outdoor Climbing". Courses are also available in the UK and abroad and are popular with members. "Scottish Winter Skills" - Held in Aviemore in Scotland for the first time in 2008 was highy successful and "Introduction to Alpine Mountaineering" is held by Mountaineering Ireland annually in Switzerland in July and is very popular among members working towards mountaineering in the Alps and beyond.

If you are considering professional training and have questions then the committee may be able to help you find a course which is right for you. Contact the committee by clicking here.
