Just to let everyone know we will not be running a club hike on sunday due to mountain skills training.
Both courses are now full. Will be running same kind of weekend in Semester 2, so blast an email to commitee if you want heads up for that.
This sunny weekend in November(13th-15th) will be the time and the place to learn what a map is. The weekend will be based in the IMC hut in Glendo. There will be two courses being run MS1 and MS2, run by 2 fully qualified ledgebags of the mountaineering world.
€€€. The course will cost money(aww).... The club will be subsidizing it though(yepe!!). It will come to €80 each for you guys(total cost is €140). This will include your 2days of instruction and your 2 nights accommodation in the yummy hut.
Why do the course??? Knowing how to look after yourself and others in the hills is very important. Who knows maybe you could give the lads a hand on the Sunday hikes. If you're a climber, once you start climbing outside the wall or the quarry, the places you climb very often involve walk ins(hikes but with loads of heavy climbing gear), knowing how to respect the hills and get off them in one piece is a good idea.
The courses can have a max of 6 on each. So decide quick and secure your place. Talk to Jack Doyle(your training officer)down at the wall, or email us. To fully secure your place we would like your €80.
To find out about the Mountain Skills course and syllabus, have look on the Mountaineering Ireland website.
What you will need to bring?? Look at hut page and hiking gear lists. Also, Discovery Series No. 56 map(laminated), Compass(Silva type), Headtorch. We could arrange a loan of a club map and compass if you are really stuck. If you are buying a compass for this talk to a committee member about which one is best to buy.
