A.G.M 12th April

12/04/2012 19:30

Fellow club members,

It has been a fantastic year of climbing, adventures, fun and madness, and it is sadly coming to an end. But, summer time is on our doorstep, and its time to rack up, rock shoes on, and get in gear out on to rock! Were just back from our best wales trip yet, where we had fantastic weather to enjoy the amazing rock climbing, scrambling, and hiking we did over the few days, and a few mad stories to keep us entertained for a while!

It’s also the end of the UCDMC year, which means we take a look back over the last few months of mad adventures and, most importantly, gear ourselves up for the year to come.

This involves the election of a new committee for 2012/2013. All UCDMC members can cast a vote. All members who are UCD students, or who are leaving UCD this summer, are eligible to be elected.
The committee positions open for nominations are:

-Captain (To be nominated as Captain, you must have previously served on the
committee)

-Meets Secretary;

-Treasurer;

-Climbing & Equipment Officer;

-Correspondence Secretary;

-Assistant Meets Secretary;

-Training & Development Officer.

The constitution, which is available on www.ucdmountaineeringclub.com, outlines what each position entails. Those of us on the committee this year will also happily answer any questions as regards responsibilities etc. You must get a member to propose you and another to second the nomination. You then must sign the paper yourself and either give it to the secratery (Monika) directly, or put it into the UCDMC Post Box (Number 63) in the Student Centre on or before Friday the 6th of April at the latest.

The A.G.M

Best Regards,
Jonathan
UCDMC Captain

50th Anniversary Mountaineering Ball

30/03/2012 19:00

Hey,

As most of you know, 2012 is the 50th Anniversary of the Club, and a great time to celebrate its achievements and those of its members over the past half a century!

In order to do this, we are hosting a 50th Anniversary Ball on the 30th March, 2012 in the D4 Berkeley Hotel, Ballsbridge. This would be a fantastic opportunity for the many generations of members to come together and remember the good times spent with the UCD Mountaineering Club, so we would be delighted if you could come along.

We are looking for any old photos from the club to make a slide show for the night, so if you would like to send in any at all to ucdmountaineeringclub@gmail.com this would be greatly appreciated!

There will be a wine reception, 3 course sit down meal and many surprises in store. Tickets are on sale for €50 per person.

Hope to see you there!

Fellow mountaineers, your Captain here,
It has come around to the most adventurous trip of the year. Where the Irish roam free among the hills of Snowdonia in search of rocks, hikes, boulders, pint mugs of coffee, and the meaning of life (for those who get lost) Wales! We will be travelling to North Wales from the 13th to the 16th of March for spectacular rock climbing (real climbing!), adventurous scrambling, boot exhilarating hiking, dodgy night bouldering, and much much more. We'll be staying in the luxurious Alpine style Casig fraith hut located in the Ogwen valley at the foot of the mighty Triffan:

Theres boulders pretty much on the door step for those keen bouldering rats, climbs, hikes and scrambles with only a short walk from the hut. Whether your a first timer, or an experienced mountaineer theres sure to be something to tickle your fancy:

We Leave Dublin port at 8:20am on the 13th sailing to holy head across the Irish sea, rent 3 nine seater vans, climb, hike, scrambe, what ever floats your boat until your fingers, legs and drinking hands are falling off and back the afternoon of the 16th.

The trip will cost 80 euro, which includes your ferry over and back, pick up at the ferry terminal at holy head and transport around North Wales for the four days, your accomodation, and fuel costs for the vans. A trip not to be missed. Don't forget to drop into Joe Brown's to stock up on climbing gear and Peats Eats climber cafe for PINT mugs of tea and coffee! Sign up starts from this thursday the 9th of Feb at the wall from 5 - 7pm. Spaces go quick as theres only 27 spots so get your act together and sign up NOW! Don't miss out!

UCDMC HOODIES!!!

17/02/2012

Who wants a UCDMC hoodie??!!

We are gonna be getting a FIRE/RED hoodie, with JET BLACK lining in the inner hood.

The UCDMC logo embroidered on the left breast in black thread.

These will be selling for ONLY €20!!

Would be cool if we all had them heading down to the Intervarsities!! I will be taking orders until February 17th at the wall/hikes so if you would like one give in your €20 and size to a committee member.

Sizes available are S, M, L, and XL. (S / 36” M / 40” L / 44” XL / 48”)
(If you have long arms I would suggest getting a bigger size)

Thanks,
Monika

A Captains Welcome

On behalf of the 2011/2012 committee, I would like to give a warm welcome to all UCD mountaineering club members, past and current, and to those who are signing up for their first time in the coming weeks to the club. This year we are celebrating our 50th anniversary, so we are hoping to have an absolutely fantastic year of activities, fun and adventure. Whether you're into climbing, hiking, scrambling, alpinism, winter mountaineering, or even just a casual climb at our climbing wall, join us for what’s hoping to be the one of the best years yet in the history of the club.
Myself and the committee will be running trips throughout the year, home and abroad. We will be travelling to many parts of Ireland, Wales and Scotland to climb, hike, and of course to have a ball of a time. The Mountaineering club is a fantastic place to meet new friends, learn something new, and travel to scenic landscapes, in Ireland and across the seas. Erasmus students and non irish students particularly benefit from the club as it is an ideal and fun way to view the Irish country side, a fast way to meet new friends and have an adventure.
The club is fortunate to have a large number of experienced, friendly and enthusiastic members, so there will always be someone around to help and pass on their knowledge to new members. So please don’t hesitate to ask! There will be heavily subsidised training for all of our members, whether for climbing, hiking, or instructing skills, we offer a wide range of training courses for whatever level you aim for.
As Edmond Hilary once said, “ Climbing is the only cure for gravity”, join us on our year around adventure, and let me encourage you to make the most of our club, the people in it and the great opportunities we provide for you by getting involved and stuck in! It is an honour and privilege to have been elected captain of UCDMC and I would like to wish you a successful, safe and enjoyable year.

Jonathan
